‘Sunshine’ Review: A Masterful Movie Deserving of Immense Praise

Sunshine Movie Review

While rarely regarded as a science-fiction classic, 2007’s Sunshine remains an underrated masterpiece of the genre. Combining the strengths of an epic thriller with a deep psychological throughline, director Danny Boyle and Alex Garland quietly made a powerful movie deserving of immense praise.

Assigned with the mission of restarting the sun, a team of astronauts embark on a deadly mission that quickly threatens the lives of all on board. The picture features Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis and Mark Strong.

A film that deserves to be heralded alongside modern sci-fi movies such as Interstellar, Sunshine is the perfect combination of a well-written plot and expert direction. Alex Garland’s dissection of humanity cuts through every scene with precision, thanks to Danny Boyle’s emotionally charged storytelling approach. The result is an imposing display of filmmaking at its finest.

Each character on display is clearly defined and plays their part in the larger events taking place. Representing staunch scientists who sometimes struggle with personal flaws such as addiction, the film’s performers are remarkable throughout. Made before their rise to stardom, Sunshine is a clear example of Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans’ talent early in their careers.

Depicting a journey through space, the film highlights the universe at its most terrifying. The sun is as much a character as any human, and acts as an ancient god requiring worship. These elements are always believable, as the special effects and CGI used still hold up to this day.

The third act of Sunshine may be its most controversial part as the plot veers into “slasher horror” territory. For some, this may be a tonal whiplash, but for others, the final villain of the piece is a representation of the darkly spiritual undertones which served as the film’s lifeblood. In this way, the ending offers a haunting climax which segues neatly into a beautiful ending.

The word “masterpiece” is thrown around a lot, but Sunshine may, in fact, be deserving of the title. A science fiction triumph which keeps viewers engaged from start to finish, this is a must-watch for all cinema lovers.
