‘Oddity’ Review: A Terrifying Experience

Oddity Review

When it comes to horror, instilling fear is essential when delivering a story within the genre. If you can successfully build dread, and startle viewers in the right places, you have already done enough to make your movie notable. Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, Oddity is a film fueled by expert horror filmmaking despite its messy script. All in all, this is a terrifying experience worth having.

Propelled by revenge, a psychic medium attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding her twin sister’s death. The film stars Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy and Steve Wall.

Oddity is a movie that thrives in its sequences of horror. Able to build tension alongside memorable jump scares, this picture is exceedingly creepy and quite frightening. Following his previous release, Caveat, Damian Mc Carthy has cemented his unique horror vision. The confidence to let a scene breathe in anticipation for what is to come is on full display here as Mc Carthy has constructed a well-paced horror experience.

The film is, unfortunately, not as strong in the writing department. While each piece of the puzzle falls into place by the end, the script is needlessly complex for how simple the story actually is. For much of the runtime, viewers will be trying their best to decipher the mystery while a narrative of this nature would have been better suited with fewer moving parts.

Although the aforementioned flaws are noticeable, the cast still manages to portray believable characters with some much-needed heart. At its core, Oddity is somewhat of a folktale and each of the players within it does a fine job of establishing the events taking place.

With two features now in his filmography, Damian Mc Carthy has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of small-scale horror. Oddity may not be the best film of the year but it is one that you should experience if you are searching for a terrifyingly fun time.
