For some time, liminal horror has thrived online. Countless YouTube channels have produced incredible videos that explore uncanny spaces via an analogue approach. Directed by Kane Parsons, a pioneer of the genre, Backrooms is the launch of liminal horror in the mainstream. While a few elements are underbaked, the product as a whole is an incredibly engaging display of psychogeographical dread.

Every week, many movies are released in both theatres and online. Because of this, it can be difficult to stand out amongst the crowd. One such example of this is the recently released Tuner, a movie directed by Daniel Roher. A pleasant thriller infused with quality characters, this is a film that flew under the radar but is certainly worth watching.

Four years since his last feature, Spielberg has returned with a new film written by long-time collaborator David Koepp. Crafted impeccably, Disclosure Day is a thrilling yet empty cinematic adventure.

Crafting a convincing on-screen romance is a difficult feat. A well-written story needs talented actors with the right chemistry to convey the many emotions that love entails. But now and then, all these elements collide to create an exciting experience. Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier and written by William Thomas Dean IV, Carolina Caroline is an enchanting film propelled by a riveting romance.

The success of horror lies in its ability to change form depending on the story. Certain films focus on scares, others let terror sit beneath the narrative, and some try to deliver frightening scenes, developed characters and deep mythology all at once. Unfortunately, too many ingredients often spoil the meal. Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, Hokum is a horror film with all the elements of a great movie. But instead of focusing on its simple throughline, it becomes bogged down by side characters and plot progression. Despite some good scares, this is an example of a masterful filmmaker led astray.
