Crafted in the vein of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Dolly is a grimy horror experience. Co-written and directed by Rod Blackhurst, this tribute to old-school slashers is a violent delight, despite its thin story and padded structure.

In horror, the simplest premises often end up being the most effective. But as is the case with any film, a solid concept is only as good as the story that carries it from scene to scene. Directed by Corin Hardy, Whistle is a fine enough movie that could have been great in someone else’s hands. That being said, the picture is a decent time at the cinema for those searching for an easy watch.

Animals as monsters have been used as villains in horror films for many decades. Continuing this heritage is Primate, a movie co-written and directed by Johannes Roberts. All in all, this is a film that’s at its best in moments of violence, and at its worst when it tries (and fails) to develop any of its characters.

Having the ability to effectively convey the human experience is a skill that few filmmakers possess. While rare, a talented director can sometimes utilise the right script to deliver a deeply emotional cinematic experience. Written and directed by Charlie Polinger, The Plague is a psychological exploration of male adolescence. Exceptionally emotional and often uncomfortable, the film’s only flaw is its limited narrative.

As artificial intelligence continues to become more pervasive in our society, films on the subject have, naturally, become more common. But as is the case with any contentious topic, a fine line must be tread for these movies to offer a worthwhile perspective. Co-written and directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Mercy is too safe to be interesting and too plain to be entertaining. While it may not be the worst film of the year, it may end up being the most forgettable.
